The Empowered Girls in Science Initiative (EGISI) successfully partnered with the Chemical Society of Nigeria (CSN) Women in Chemistry, alongside the American Chemical Society (ACS) and Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) International Student Chapters at the University of Calabar, to host the 2025 International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) Global Women's Breakfast.
The breakfast workshop, themed "Accelerating Equity in Science," coincided with both the UN International Day of Women and Girls in Science & Technology and the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology. The event brought together 130 participants, including 40 professional women, 10 male allies, and 80 high school girls from across the region.
The core program featured interactive technical sessions designed to make complex science accessible, alongside practical professional development strategies:
- Demystifying Quantum Concepts: Led by expert chemistry educators, this session broke down the foundational principles of quantum chemistry into engaging, shattered workplace myths, and built inclusive models.
- Professional Onboarding & Growth: Practical guidance on leveraging professional scientific memberships to unlock career development opportunities, international research networks, and higher education paths.
- Workplace Etiquette Dynamics: Specialized panels for adult professionals focused on structural strategies to remove gender barriers and create equitable workplaces in technical industries.
Participants also took part in interactive chemistry games, collaborative logic puzzles, and personal vision-boarding sessions designed to map out future academic goals. To support their ongoing studies, EGISI distributed customized notebooks, laboratory safety coats, periodic tables, and essential personal health products to all attending students.
