Accelerating Equity in Science: EGISI Hosts 2025 IUPAC Global Women’s Breakfast in Calabar

The Empowered Girls in Science Initiative (EGISI) successfully partnered with the Chemical Society of Nigeria (CSN) Women in Chemistry, alongside the American Chemical Society (ACS) and Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) International Student Chapters at the University of Calabar, to host the 2025 International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) Global Women's Breakfast.

The breakfast workshop, themed "Accelerating Equity in Science," coincided with both the UN International Day of Women and Girls in Science & Technology and the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology. The event brought together 130 participants, including 40 professional women, 10 male allies, and 80 high school girls from across the region.

Chempreneur 3.0: Upskilling 100 Vulnerable Girls in Sustainable Product Formulation

To address youth unemployment and systemic gender gaps in industrial fields, EGISI collaborated with the ACS Younger Chemists Committee (YCC), Beyond Benign, EducationUSA, and the University of Calabar's Department of Pure & Industrial Chemistry to launch the third edition of the Younger Chemists Workshop ("Chempreneur 3.0: Educate to Innovate").

This intensive two-day training program brought together 100 secondary school girls from Calabar South LGA, a region that benefits greatly from targeted educational and economic interventions. The workshop focused on practical, eco-friendly product formulation and chemical laboratory safety.

Transforming Chemistry Education: TTT Workshop Empowers 80 Regional Educators

Grassroots student transformation begins with empowering classroom teachers. In alignment with this core value, the Empowered Girls in Science Initiative (EGISI) hosted the second edition of its Train-the-Trainers (TTT) Workshop at the West African People’s Institute (WAPI) in Calabar.

This year's workshop, themed "Sustainable Chemistry: Educating for a Greener Future," was hosted in collaboration with the ACS and RSC University of Calabar International Student Chapters, Global Eco-Mentors (GEMI), Philma Services, and Blameless Sight Solutions, with formal endorsement from the Cross River State Ministry of Education. The intensive two-day program brought together 80 chemistry teachers and educators from across the Calabar Educational Zone.
